The current madness is the ole mentos and diet coke experiment. Very cool. Go and check it out.

But, what is WOOT? you ask. A kinda cool site where they sell one techo-gadget per day. They begin the sale at midnight, CST and run it for 24 hours. Just one thing. So, for example, they will buy 4000 wireless mice and just sell them for a 24 hour period, or until all the mice are sold out. Sometimes they have cool stuff, and sometimes it is garbage. I should say that I have yet to buy anything, as m natural frugality has taken over.

They also have the much coveted BOC, or bag of crap. Last time, it sold out in three minutes. Just go there and check it out.

Radio Adventures of Doctor Floyd

This is a great podcast. I don't know what I am waiting for. Maybe it will get better with age? I'm thinking I'll just read the novelization, and call it done until the big, six movie DVD set comes out.

In events closer to home, I will NOT be at BaltiCon this year. I repeat, I WILL NOT be at BaltiCon this year. Only half of the reason is because family will be in town. The really reason is that I don't want to bring my will-be-six month old daughter with me, and I don't want to leave her at home either. There is always next year.

I never did get Windows 98. To tell the truth, I have just been playing AOEII so much, I can't see playing XCOM, no matter how good it was. I was lying in bed this morning thinking of it, and I remember the graphics aren't all that, but it is a really fun strategy game, so is AOEII. The only thing is, I really suck at the battles, I just win by "superior" numbers. Oh well.

I tried a demo of AOEIII. I hated it. I found the interface clumsy and annoying. I found the villagers idiots. I only played it for about ten minutes though. I am thinking of just getting Warcraft anyway, though. As soon as I master the battles of AOEII.

I'm also working on my summer reading list. I finally finished Judas Unchained, and I was only slightly disappointed in the outcome. I was thinking of reading Green Mars and Blue Mars. Maybe another Ringworld book, Ringworld engineers. Some Neil Gaiman, since I haven't read any of his stuff yet. If you have any suggestions, please leave a comment or shoot me an e-mail.

I got your pathetic right here

I'm actually thinking of re-loading Widows 98 on my old, dead laptop. This is the same laptop that I screwed up my Windows 2K install on (don't ask) then couldn't repair because I forgot my admin password (no comments on that either), then couldn't just re-install because I don't have a bootable CD, and there you have it. I tried putting MEPIS on it, but it was too slow.

I am willing to admit defeat on it, really. My thought was, though, I have all these cool old games. Well, two anyway. XCOM:UFO Defense and XCOM:Apocalypse. Love them, and they run perfect under Windows 98. Not so much under Windows 2K and def. not under Windows XP. So my thinking was, I would just make this old laptop my XCOM gaming system, since it is nothing but a very large, very old paperweight. Cool eh? The only fly in the ointment is that I don't have a copy of win 98. It is selling on ebay from 30-80 USD right now. Yeah, right. I am just too cheap to pay that. I also saw some bootable win 2k cDs, but XCOM doesn't run on win 2k, so.

What I need is a cheap or free copy, full version, of win 98. Right.

I also got Age of Empires II Gold version, and I have been playing that when I get a free minute. I was going to get WoW, but defaulted to AOEII instead.

BaltiCon 40

To go or not to go, that is the question.

In a perfect world, there would be no dilemma. I also just bought Judas Unchained.

Red Mars was good, good enough that I will try and read Green Mars. I was a bit distracted during the reading, and I think a lot of the finer plot points were lost on me. I would get to a certain part of the book, and I wouldn't have "seen it coming". I have yet to determine if the blame is truly my own, or a shortcoming of the author's. It was a good book, however. It was a very plot driven story, with interesting characters (who all seemed to end up dead, no matter).

I just bought Judas Unchained, by Peter Hamilton.

Note to authors. Please, please please. Include a synopsis at the beginning of your sequel novel. J.R. Tolkien did this in his Lord of the Rings saga, it made reading it much nicer. You didn't have to depend on your own crappy memory to remember what happened. I tend to have a life (not much, but one nonetheless), and it is very hard for me to remember the finer plot plots when it can be up to a year between books for me. I am having a hard time starting Judas Unchained because I can't remember what exactly all the characters were doing at the end of Pandora's Star. Judas Unchained starts up right st the end, as far as I can tell, and it is rough going.

Podcasting for slackers?

I am very behind on my podcast listening. I would like to post here once a week or so. I'll try and keep that up.

What I have been reading.

I just finished Speaker for the Dead, Orson Scott Card
and Ringworld, Larry Niven

I am currently reading Red Mars, Kim Stanley Robinson

Speaker for the Dead

I think this was a good story. I found myself much more able to relate to Ender the adult than Ender the child. When I read Ender's game, it was much more of a fiction/fairy tale story for me. The book dealt with children placed in such an extreme situation, I really had a hard time relating with the characters. In Speaker, I found myself able to relate more with Ender as an adult. Also, many of the other characters in the novel were also adult, which helps.

I thought this was a very good follow-up for Ender's game. The story moved quickly enough to keep the reader interested. There was always the hidden view of the future, and I found that the novel never became stale or predictable. There were some aspects of the novel that I didn't pay as much attention to.

Another entry

Podcasts

I have been trying out a few new podcasts lately. I am too lazy to add them to the sidebar yet, but you should def. check out:

Spaceship Radio, it is a very cool podcast that plays old sci-fi radio plays. They have some very good shows, and it really draws you in. Highly recommended.

The next one I have is Spherical Tomi. This is really a book by Jack Mangan, he of the Duel of the Fates. You can see his website here, and you should also listen to his DOTF on Wingin' It if you desire. You can hear Spherical Tomi on Podiobooks, this is a very cool site where you can subscribe to various audiobooks. You must subscribe to the Spherical Tomi feed, the readings are excellent and done by Jack and his wife. You can also subscribe to hear the first DOTF as well.

I like the Spherical Tomi story so much, I am considering going for the purchase of the E-book. This is big news as I am cheap as all get out, and very protective of my bank balance.

My Novel

I last worked on my novel, The Eye of the Beholder, on Nov 30. This was also, coincidentially ,the last day of NaNoWriMo, go figure. I called it finished, slapped a Part I label on it, and said I would finish it by adding another 25000-30000 words to Part II, then heading back for the re-write. At this point, the novel has really taken the back seat in my life, and I probably won't (realistically)get back around to it before the fall.

I will dedcate my writerly tendencies to writing book reviews and short stories until then, we meet again.

Novel status

I "finished" NaNoWriMo, but my novel is not finished. I labeled it Part I, and now I have to finish Part II. I was hoping Part II to be around 30K words, then my total novel before editing would be 80K words. It really does need some heavy duty editing, I need to add in some more characters, remove some, and add more detail on others.

With that said, I am really not in any hurry to finish. (I have a more pressing concern in the short-term to worry about), plus every time I think of the novel, I get very tired. I'll be happy to write the next 30K over the next three months, then start the editing process, which I am looking forward to. I always preferred editing the written word to coming up with the written word, personally.
Now, onto other things.

I know I promised a review of Pandora's Star by Peter Hamilton, but I waited so long, I don't really remember the finer plot points. Judas Unchained is now coming out in March I hear, so I will need to get the book back before I start the next edition.

I am also planning another trip to the library, so I will make my updated list of what I will be reading soon. If I am lucky, I may be able to get some chapters read to me while I labor.

Speaking of audio books, I went to podiobooks and started Spherical Tomi by Jack Mangan. It is starting out very strong, but I am having a hard time keeping all the characters and events straight, because I listen in my car during my commute. It is very good, and I suggest you go and check it out.

Now for the contribution this week.

Why I don't see movies in the theatre.

There is a very simple explanation, really. The explanation is, I have a 19 month old child at home. I work full time, so I would feel guilty leaving him with a babysitter so I can go to a theatre and watch a movie, when if I wait a few months I can buy it on DVD and watch it on the comfort of my own house. When you consider it, it cost about the same. I begin salivating akin to Pavlov's dog the moment I walk into the theatre, even if I wasn't hungry and/or thirsty when I showed up, I am that way by the time I hand my ticket over and see the concession stand.

I rarely escape with less that ten dollars in the till. So I can reason spending even 20 for a DVD, which I rarely do. Besides, we have the whole, HDTV, home theatre set-up, and it is really quite nice to watch movies at home, I must say. And I can get up to answer the call of nature without having to hike a mile to the nearest facility (and of course some other movie just let out so there is a line), missing 10 minutes of action.

With all that said, I have yet to see Episode III, Serenity, Batman Begins or the Fantastic 4. These are all on my list, but the one I am the lest excited about is Episode III. I really just like the old Star Wars and I think the new Start Wars is crap. There. I said it. It is crap.

So sue me.

It's over!

Boo-Yah!

I am more than halfway there. Yeah baby!

I didn't quite hit my goal of 2500 words yesterday, I had wanted to reach a word count of 27,700 so I am a few hundred short, but I had reached a point in my story where I really need to start a new sub-plot and my everyday life was beginning, so I just stopped there. That leaves me with a goal of 2857 words for today. There is a write-in tonight, so I am sure I will be able to make it.

I have some pretty lofty goals all through the rest of the week, at least 2000 words per day. I felt this was necessary with the holiday next week, and I have family coming to visit. I have some light days set up for next week, about 1000 words/day.

How is the actual story progressing? Well, it is real crap. I still have a good plot (at least I think so), but my time lines are really skewed. I also need to add in more background as I proceed, and my main character needs a lot more pre-development. I actually want this to be a good story, I don't think I will ever submit it for publication, but this story is near and dear to my heart. I would hate to leave it as a large pile of you-know-what.

Anyway, keep up the writing!

Day 13.5

It is actually Day 14, but I am still in the process of writing, so.

The novel is progressing. What occured instead was a series of fatal errors. Every time I tried to open a program, there would be some random error message, and if I sent the error report in (ha ha ha) the screen would say, "Install SP2, dumbass". So I did, because I wanted to open some programs, it took like 4 hours. I was hoping to do some work during lunch, but I had a working luch and I was incredibly busy at work today. I got home late from work and i started writing at 9pm, I just finished for the night, it is 11:21. I had to go to my sick child a few times, I ate a sandwich, and I did some spacing out. I did manage to crank out just over 2500 words, giving me a total word count so far of:

12,606 / 50,000
(25.2%)

So I am 400 words short of my goal.

Updated 11-9-05: I had a billion typos so I fixed those. Well, that is not technically true. On day 7 I did no writing. I was exhausted, and I spent the evening at home vegetating. I did some outlining, so it wasn't completely wasted. My NaNoWriMo goals are as follows:

Complete Chapter 5
Begin Chapter 6 (and I mean at least half)
Attain a word count of at least 3000 words.

I have calculated that at my preset output I will never finish on time, so I need to really kick it up a notch. Last night's outlining session really helped get my mind in order. I have been mostly outlining as I go, which has been giving me some very unstructured chapters. I am confident that today's writing will progress relatively smoothly. Needless to say, this book will need some intensive rewriting. This is my first fiction writing experience, so I am taking that into account.

Now, onto the Mars rover. I have my active desktop enabled on my crappy windows XP system (don't get me started). I have a webpage there, directed to the Astronomy Picture of the Day, so everyday I am connected to the internet, I get a nice picture on my desktop. Today's picture is of the barren Mars landscape. I think it is a good thing we don't have AIs yet. If we did, we would have equipped the rovers with one, then sent them off to Mars to do their roving around, alone and solitary. I have to believe that anything capable of independent thought would get very depressed and lonely looking out at Mars. I am positive that the current rover is not lonely, but just looking at that picture makes me lonely for the rover. It makes me think of that movie, Red Planet I think it was, where the robot went crazy and started taking out the team.

Just my two cents.

Day 6

I had planned for this to be my off day, but never mind that. My personal goal had been to finish CHapter 4, and I did that plus started on Chapter 5. So of course I had to reach that goal as well. Maybe tomorrw I'll feel better, but I cna harldy think right now(let alone type). I am sure every word I wrote was utter crap.

Here it is...

10,072 / 50,000
(20.1%)

whew, exhausted. If you are also a NaNo, you may notice that my word counts here are lower than the counts on my NaNo profile. That is because I upload my "novel" into the NaNo word counter, which always give a higher word count than Word, so I am not cheating. I like the Word word count still, it keeps me in perspective.

I went home early and actually got some writing done. My chapters are already changing. I am going to either have to add another chapter into the outline, or change my chapter outline. But I am almost done with Chapter 3, I just have to write one more scene. Then I can start with Chapter 4. So it is looking good for me to have written through Chapter 4 by Saturday.

Day 3 update

Day 3 is here! I have caught some deadly virus, so I was out sick yesterday afternoon, and as soon as I do this training I am scheduled to do, I will be back out sick again. I had thought if I took my computer home, I would get some writing done. Well, not quite. I still need to do some more outlining though. The story is progressing well, for all of one and a half chapters of it. My first chapter is a bit loose, and the second one is heading that way. I have all these ideas, so I just need to sit down and sketch out a rough outline.

I have always hated doing outlines. I remember every writing class I ever took, the instructor said, "do an outline." When I wrote my dissertation, I did do a rough outline. While it was a hard labor, it did help me communicate with my advisor the content, and it provided a nice road-map for me when I got 'stuck' while writing. Even though I know that outlines make writing just that much easier, I still detest making them up.

With NaNoWriMo being so quick, and my complete lack of preparation so thorough, I will have to outline on the fly. Luckily my writing seems to just spill out (for now, anyway), so the time I actually spend writing I am actually writing. I was planning to take a day off of writing this weekend, so that may be a good time to get some more outlining done. Of course, by this weekend I plan on having written through chapter 4.

Anyway, here is the wordmeter for the day:

3,387 / 50,000
(6.8%)

The Chapter count stands at one complete. I will finish Chapter 2 today.

I do my word counts through Word, and it seems to really under-count. When I uploaded my doc into the NaNoWriMo counter, I had significantly more words. This is a good thing.

On a end note, I cannot access the web page today either. I can appreciate that they are probably just flooded with all us crappy writers accessing the servers at once, but it does get old.

Day 2

It's the second day! There is no reveiw, yet.

Pandora's Star by Peter Hamiliton

You can find a much better review (for now) here. I must apologize. When I have more time I will post a more comprehensive review.

This was a FANTASTIC read. I am very excited, and I cannot wait for Judas Unchained.

The book was long, very much so. There are a lot of characters in this book. I think it was around chapter 6 before you met the same character for the second time. Many of the characters are very realistic, bringing you into their lives. A couple of the characters, however had the opposite effect. They were very 2-D, and I would find myself scanning very quickly through their chapters. There also was a lot more "background" on the goverment of the universe, that I didn't really care about. All of the political mumbo-jumbo just seemed to detract away from the actual story.

I don't expect to have much time for the next month, though. I am participating in NaNoWriMo. So, I will be cranking out a 50,000 word novel in the month of November. In my spare time, I will get that review out for you though. It will provide me with a much needed respite, while still honing my writing skills.

Hey, it isn't too late to join the fun! So you are getting a super entry. Enjoy.

I just finished reading two books.

The Caves of Steel by Isaac Asimov

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card

I am currently reading, Pandora's Star by Peter Hamiliton

I have read The Caves of Steel about a go-zillion times. I love it. I am going to post some fan-fiction that occurs in that universe. One of these days.

The Caves of Steel is this detective story that happens in the future of the planet Earth. In this version of the future, people have taken to living in large, enclosed cities. People don't go outside, the entire society is quite agoraphobic. In the recent past, colonists have set out from Earth to colonize other planets, the spacers. Spacers and Earth-people do not get along, for many reasons. The people on Earth also have this mob-culture mentality. They are all ranked in a socio-economic way depending on their job. They also inherit status from their parents. People eat in large cafeterias, and share public facilities. I get the idea that the apartments are analogous to a dorm room. You don't really learn much about the spacers, but you do know that they live in the open, are much more technologically advanced, and practice some pretty extreme eugenics. They also have robots (as this is the first novel in the robot books), and obviously they all come from other worlds that people from Earth settled "long" ago. They have robots because they have a low birth rate (due to the Eugenics), and they need the extra labor. They don't need the extra labor back on Earth, so the Earth people resent the robot labor-force. I think SS may have borrowed a lot of this public opinion for his movie, AI.

I won't go into the actual plot of the book, but it is very interesting. It is not my favorite robot book. I really like I, Robot better. On a different tack, I saw the movie. I actually liked the movie. Why? As you know, I am not a fan of the "hollywood-ization" of good sci-fi. It usually just turns out bad, with the true die-hard fans lamenting the loss of the story, and the rest of the viewing public not quite "getting it". I, Robot (the movie) was different enough from any of the short stories that it was good enough to stand alone. It also benefited from a very good leading actor, and very good supporting cast as well.

I know I have read the other two robot novels, but I can't remember them so well, either. I will have to go back and re-read those as well.

I just heard about Ender's game from my friends over at The Dragon Page. I listen to a lot of their podcasts, and they were having a discussion with Orson Scott Card. I thought it sounded interesting, and when I went to the library, there it was. I also liked this book, a lot. If you have read, Halo, The Fall of Reach, you will notice some similarity in the two books. Basically they are taking children, and putting them through some very un-childlike actions to mold them into super-soldiers.

I really don't want to say more, because a lot of it will spoil the plot of the book, but it is a very good book and really gets you thinking. As a parent of a very young child, reading these kinds of books really makes me think about the capabilities of my own child.

Pandora's star. I am still reading this. I'll post a review as soon as I am finished.

Also, keep on the lookout for Ask the Chemist. I am a chemist and sometimes I get pretty agitated when I read or see something in the news that is PLAIN WRONG, so I will start this forum as a way to answer questions sent to me, or correct these wrong things. This will occur once a week. Stay tuned.

Linux

Specifically, MEPIS 3.3.1.

I have already discussed the situation leading up to my decision to convert over to Linux in my personal, at home, just screwing around, POS laptop. It's on my other blog here.

I haven't received the disk yet, but I already know I am going to have problems. It's because of my secret power. Yes, I have a secret power. The power to f*** up electronics.

We have a wireless network at home. Yes, it is secure and encrypted. I also have USB driven devices that I would like to work, specifically, my IPOD, digital camera, PDA, and external CD burner. I am already worried that these will not function. Already. Please, no comments form the peanut gallery along the lines of: "buy a new computer already", because if you had read the other post like I asked you too, you would see that buying a new computer isn't in the stars for some time.

Why do computer/software geeks have to make up their own language? Why can't you just call it by what it is, instead of making up a new word? I am arming myself with knowledge, so that when my MEPIS disk finally arrives, I can (hopefully) install it and get most of my hardware up and running. I realize that the Netgear wireless card, coupled with the Linksys/Westell DSL system is problematic. So I go here, and most of it makes sense, but what the f*** is a CHIPSET? This one is even worse, and it is meant to tell me how to do all this crap. Yes, I am a geek but unlike the majority of folk out there believe, not all geeks understand computers. Sheesh.

I'll just have to wait and keep you updated on my progress.

Please let me know if anyone has any cool links to Linux programs, specifically for:
1. Podcasters
2. Games
3. Syncing software for my Dell Axim
4. So much so, that I purchased a special leather bound edition of all four installments. Yes, it is true.

I also happen to be a book purist, and I usually detest when movies are made from books, especially if they are my favorite books. As a direct result, I have not seen the movie adaptation. I have not heard a lot of buzz, either yay or nay, about it so I must conclude that is was an average movie. So if you have seen the movie and you have comments, please leave me a comment or drop me an e-mail.

The thing that really got me started thiking about about THGG was the Cricket tournament. Recall that lovely scene in Life, the Universe and Everything when Arthur and Ford are transported to Lord's on a chesterfield sofa during the final minutes of the championship cricket match, and they meet Slartibartfast there, then the Krikkit robots descend, steal the ashes (the silver bail), kill people and leave. Well, England is currently playing Australia for the ashes right now, and Jason is English so he pays attention to such. Of course I had to bring up the Krikkit robots and I told him that if England won the tournament, then maybe the Krikkit robots would come and take the ashes.

Jason thinks I am mad.

This is the world I live in. I listen to this podcast, Geek Fu Action Grip and the host there, who's name is Mur, was talking awhile back about how she always dresses comfortably because she nevers knows when she will be transported to an alternate or an entirely different world.

I think in the corner of my mind (ruled by madness, perhaps) that if England wins the match, the Krikkit robots will appear. Well, I'm sure if it happens we will all know about it.

I had intended to write a much longer first entry, and tell you all of my plans, but I will have to do that later. Maybe this weekend. I really do have some cool news I want to share with you all.

Keep it real.
